Traffic rules

Priority to the right

This chapter helps you understand the key principles of priority to the right.

Key ideas

When nothing else controls the intersection, the priority-to-the-right rule applies. You must give way to traffic coming from the right.

The width of the roads does not determine priority under this rule. Give way to traffic from the right when the rule applies.

Applying what you learned

You approach a junction without traffic lights or priority signs. Check whether the priority-to-the-right rule applies and actively look for vehicles from your right, even if your road appears wider. Slow down early enough to give way clearly. Do not assume another driver has seen you; remain ready if events unfold differently than expected.

Check your understanding

You reach an intersection without signs or traffic lights. A car approaches from the right. What applies?

Answer: You must give way to the car coming from the right

When the priority-to-the-right rule applies, does it matter that your road is wider than the road on the right?

Answer: No
